#FridayReads 16.8.2013

Posted on Friday, August 16, 2013

Hi! I'm sorry for the lack of content the past two weeks, and I don't really have an explanation for last week, but this week I've been busy doing GISHWHES or The Greatest International Scavenger Hunt The World Has Ever Seen and it's been a lot of fun! I haven't read much this week, but I'll try to read a bit this weekend, and I'm planning on continuing with A Storm of Swords part 2 by George R. R. Martin.

I've already read 145 pages of it, so I'm hoping to read about 100 pages more this weekend. I start school next week, so I probably won't read a lot the next few weeks! fml.

What are you reading this weekend?

Summer Songs #2

Posted on Sunday, August 4, 2013

I've started listening to a lot of new music the past few months, so I decided to update you with some more summer songs I recommend! Check out part one here.

#10 alt-J - Fitzpleasure

The song is catchy and the music video is awesome! I love this song so much. It's not my favorite by alt-J, but it has earned the spot of my 10th favorite on this list.

#9 Ellie Goulding - You, My Everything

This song was created for Skins Fire, and not only did it fit Effie's episodes so well, it's also really good. I've been listening to this song a lot lately, and although it didn't rank very high on this list, I love it a lot!

#8 Grouplove - Ways to Go

Grouplove is probably the group that I've listened to the most this summer. I love their unique voices and catchy songs.

#7 Lana Del Rey - Young and Beautiful
My favorite song from the Great Gatsby soundtrack by far! I've started to like Lana Del Ray a bit more lately, even though her voice makes me sleepy.

#6 Imagine Dragons - Working Man

This song makes me really happy.

#5 alt-J - Breezeblocks
*Drumroll* This is my favorite alt-J song! Yup, two of their songs made it to the list.

#4 The Majority Says - Kings of The Night
Why doesn't The Majority Says have more fans? They're awesome! I love their music, and this is my favorite song by them. You should also check out 114 and Dance to the Beat!

#3 Bastille - Of The Night

Top 3! Since Bastille is my favorite band, I had to add a song by them, right? This summer, I've listened to their cover of Rythm of The Night so many times, and I love the music video as well.

#2 Grouplove - Tongue Tied
My second favorite song is another one by Grouplove - Tongue Tied! Gosh, this song is amazing and makes me so happy.

#1 Woodkid - I Love You
And the first place goes to I Love You by Woodkid! If you don't want to watch the intro to this video skip to 1:30 to listen to the song! Oh my god, words can't describe my love for this song. It has everything I love in a song - a unique voice, nice rhythm and it's not like anything I've heard before. It reminds me a bit of Amy Winehouse in a way, and the music video is awesome as well!

What are your favorite songs at the moment?

#FridayReads 26.7.2013

Posted on Friday, July 26, 2013

This weekend I'm probably only going to read Beauty Queens by Libba Bray. I'm already 160 pages/40% into it, and oh my god, it's so hilarious! I probably won't read much though, at least not today or tomorrow. I'll hopefully finish it by the end of the weekend, but I'm not really in the mood for reading at the moment!

If I finish Beauty Queens, which I doubt, I'll pick up and finish Clockwork Angel since I only have about 100 pages left. It's definitely much better than City of Bones!

What are you reading this weekend?

BookTube-A-Thon Schedule

Posted on Sunday, July 14, 2013

The Booktube-A-Thon is a read-a-thon specifically created for youtubers, by youtubers. If you want to learn more about it, check out Raileen and Ariel's videos about it.

The booktube-a-thon starts in about half an hour my time, and in preparation I thought I would post my schedule here, so I've made it public and hopefully, it will help me read as much as I want to.

The read-a-thon will last all week, but I'm going to be at Slottsfjell music festival in Norway from thursday to saturday, and I will spend most of wednesday and sunday on a train. I'm going to try and read as much as possible on sunday and wednesday, but while I'm at the festival I'm not going to participate.

If you want to see my original TBR, check it out here. I changed a few things though, because the plan was to drive to the festival in a car, but my dad broke his fingers, so he can't drive. I don't get as carsick on trains, so I'm not going to listen to The Fault in Our Stars on audiobook as I planned, but I will be reading Divergent instead, which will cover the re-read challenge, and the 500+ pages challenge(even though it's 11 pages less than 500, I'm still counting it)

There are several challenges you can choose to do:
1) read an average of 300 pages a day
2) read a book with over 500 pages
3) re-read one book
4) finish a series/trilogy
5) read a book that's been on your shelf forever
6) listen to an audiobook
7) read a classic

Here is my planned schedule for the week:

Monday: Anna and The French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins, 372 pages, does not cover any challenges
Tuesday: Requiem by Lauren Oliver, 391 pages, covers the "finish a series/trilogy" challenge
Wednesday: Divergent by Veronica Roth, 489 pages, covers the "reread a book" challenge and almost the "500 pages" challenge, I'm hoping to read at least 300 pages and finish it on sunday
Thursday, Friday and Saturday: Nothing/read a few pages of Divergent
Sunday: Finish Divergent by Veronica Roth, 489 pages + The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, 180 pages, covers the "read a classic" challenge, the "listen to an audiobook" challenge and the "read a book that's been on your shelf forever" challenge.

That completes all of the challenges, but there is also a bonus challenge to see how many challenges you can combine, and as you can see, The Great Gatsby covers three of the challenges. To read an average of 300 pages per day, I'm going to have to read 1200 pages over the four days I'm participating, and the page count for all of these books are 1441. I'm also hoping that I can squeeze in some reading whilst I''m at the festival, and if I have any leftover time, I will be continuing with City of Bones by Cassandra Clare.

The 5th Wave // Rick Yancey

Posted on Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Let's talk about The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey. This book was very hyped up, and I was really excited to read it. I had heard nothing but good reviews on it, and even though I usually prefer to read light, funny books during the summer, I decided to pick it up.
This book basically follows Cassie, a 17 year old girl who gets separated from her brother, her only remaining family member who has survived the 4 waves: After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one. Aliens are invading earth, and 97% of all people are dead.
After about 100 pages, the book switched POV and we meet a guy called Zombie. The synopsis on the back of the book, doesn't tell you that there would be alternate POV's, and I thought the book was only supposed to follow Cassie. It was a bit hard to adapt to it at first, but I was able to look past it. One of the things that annoyed me about this book, was that you don't get to know who each chapter follows. When Yancey switched POV, you had to read until you saw their name, and then go back to the start of the chapter and read it again to fully understand everything.
The plot of the book was very interesting. It was difficult to put down, and the action scenes were easy to follow. I didn't fully understand everything about the  aliens, and I found myself skimming through some of the pages, because I simply didn't understand much of it.
Cassie was made out to be a kick-ass, strong female lead, but she ended up doing nothing but making out with a mysterious guy named Evan for half of the book, and she didn't kick any ass until the last few pages. I liked the characters, but I didn't like what happened to them in the plot.
When I was about halfway through the book I started to notice why some people compared The 5th wave to Ender's Game. I noticed this because some of the things Zombie experienced seemed like they were copied from Ender's Game. I think the fact that I finished Ender's Game last month ruined this book for me a bit, but I also think it was pretty obvious that Rick Yancey had taken *cough* a bit of inspiration from Orson Scott Card. (and with a bit, I mean a lot)
At one point, Cassies parts became very similar to The Host. This just pissed me off even more, and definitely pulled down my rating.
All in all, I don't understand why this book was so hyped up. The plot was interesting; yes, but it also seemed very inspired(copied) from other books. I ended up giving the book 3/5 stars. It was interesting and kept me turning the pages, and it was definitely a bit creepy since I think it was set in present time. The writing style was pretty good, and I liked the characters. Other than that, I didn't like this book at all.

#FridayReads 6.7.2013

Posted on Friday, July 5, 2013

It's already saturday in Norway, but I thought I would do a quick #FridayReads anyway. This weekend I'm going to read two of the most hyped up books lately; The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey and Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. I'm super exited for both of them, and I hope they live up to the hype!

Reading Wrap-Up // June 2013

Posted on Sunday, June 30, 2013

This was a really good reading month for me. I finished nine books in total, and since I'm usually a pretty slow reader, I don't think I've ever read that many books in a month. I enjoyed most of the books I finished, and I've reviewed about half of them.

The first book I finished was Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver, and you can see my review of it here.
I didn't enjoy it as much as Delirium, and I gave it 3.5/5 stars.

The next book I finished was The Elite by Kiera Cass. The Elite is the sequel to The Selection, which follows America Singer, who gets chosen to participate in a competition to marry the prince. In The Elite, there are only 5 remaining girls, and America is still figuring out if she still wants to be in the competition or not. I liked it a lot, even though I have some issues with the world building, but I still gave it 5/5 stars.

Then I listened to An Abundance of Katherines by John Green on audio book. The book is about a child prodigy who only dates girls named Katherine. Colin is working on a theorem to determine who will dump who in a relationship and while the book is described as a road trip-book, the road trip ends after about 100 pages. The book was pretty boring. I thought the plot sounded interesting, and it was, but the writing style and John Green's ability to write very similar characters in all his books, made it pretty uninteresting and difficult to get through. I gave the book 3/5 stars.

The Next book I read was Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. You can find my review of it here.  Scarlet is the sequel to Cinder, it takes place in both New Bei Jing and France, and is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. I gave it 5/5 stars.

The next book I finished was Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. I was a bit hesitant to pick it up, because the author seems like an asshole, but I downloaded it(illegaly, didn't want to support the author) and I did not regret it! Ender's Game is about  a boy named Ender who gets chosen to become some sort of a super soldier(I had some difficulties understanding that part) the book is really action packed and probably my favorite sci-fi book. I can't wait to continue with the series! I gave Ender's Game 5/5 stars.

I also finished The Enemy by Charlie Higson and you can check out my review of it here! It was a really great, action packed zombie book and I gave it 4/5 stars.

I finished A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin only a few hours ago. It is the second book in A Song of Ice and Fire and the sequel to A Game of Thrones. It was really great to finally finish it after reading it for several months. I gave it 4/5 stars because I didn't enjoy the plot as much as the first book, but I still really, really enjoyed every page. It was good to read something different than only YA!

The last two books that I finished, I read as a part of Books of Amer's Debut-A-Thon! I did mini reviews in this blog post, and the books I read were If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch and Pivot Point by Kasie West. See my reviews and read more about the read-a-thon here!

What books did you finish this month?

Debut-A-Thon Wrap Up

This weekend I participated in Books of Amber's Debut-A-Thon. If the name doesn't tell you what it's about, it's a read-a-thon where you read as many 2013 debuts as possible.

I still have about six hours left of this read-a-thon, but I decided to only read two books even though I know I could have finished at least one or two more. I simply don't own any more debuts, and I don't have the money to buy any more books for a little while.

The books I finished were If You find Me by Emily Murdoch and Pivot Point by Kasie West. I read both of them in about a day, and I liked both of them a lot.

If You Find Me follows two sisters, Carey and Janessa who has been living in the woods with their mentally ill mother for as long as they can remember. When their mother leaves them and two strangers appear to take them into the city, the girls have to adapt to the outside world. It was a beautiful book about neglect, love and loyalty  What made me love the book so much, was the way Carey saw things. The book is told from her perspective, and seing her go to school and meet her father again was just heartbreaking. She was clever for her age, and her love for her sister was beautiful to read. There are a few mysteries in this book; Why doesn't Janessa speak to anyone but Carey? What made their mother run away with her daughter into the woods in the first place? All the mysteries wrapped up perfectly and I ended up giving the book 5/5 stars. It is definitely one of my new favorites!

I also really love the cover, and although I read the book on my kindle, I think I might purchase a physical copy of the book just to see the beautiful book on my shelf.

Pivot Point by Kasie West follows the story of Addison Coleman who has the ability to see both outcomes when faced with a choice. When her parents tell her that they are getting a divorce, Addison looks into the future to see what her life will be like with each of her parents. In one future, she moves out of the compound she previously lived in and starts school with "norm" kids, meaning kids without powers like she has. She meets Trevor, who quickly becomes her best friend. In another future, she becomes the girlfriend of a quarterback and with love and loss in poth possible futures, she has to face a difficult decision. I liked this book a lot, but not near as much as If You Find Me. I had some problems with understanding the world and powers of the people in the compound and I felt like the middle part was a bit boring. I also have to admit that I skipped a few of the chapters from the future where she stays in the compound, because they simply didn't interrest me. I gave the book 4/5 stars.

This book also has one of my all time favorite book covers, even though I don't want to spend any more money on purchasing the physical book.

Did you participate in the debut-a-thon?

Scarlet // Marissa Meyer

Posted on Friday, June 28, 2013

This review contains mild spoilers for Cinder.

Scarlet is the second book in the Lunar Chronicles and the sequel to Cinder. Scarlet is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood and follows both Cinder and Prince Kai as well as Scarlet Benoit - a badass new character. In stead of a long, red cape, Scarlet has a red hoodie and a handgun, and her mission in this book is to find her grandmother, who has been kidnapped or killed.

The book starts off right where the last one ended - Cinder and a fellow inmate, Captain Carswell Thorne, manage to escape from prison. They are on the run, and queen Levana will stop at nothing to find them.
Scarlet Benoit lives in a small town in France, and she could probably beat up every other dystopian heroine out there. She does not need anybody's help, and she is not afraid to pull out her gun to get what she wants. Her grandmother is missing, and when no one else seems to care, Scarlet take matters into her own hands, and decides to pair up with the mysterious Wolf to go find her grandmère.

In most of the reviews I've read, people seem to like Wolf. He is mysterious, tall, with dark hair and muscles, and even though he isn't your typical "tough guy" (he is a bit shy and awkward) which made him stand out, I didn't like him a lot. I didn't like the "insta-love" between him and Scarlet either. They fall in love pretty quickly, and as much as I loved Scarlet - I couldn't understand why she liked Wolf.

I loved the plot of the book though. It was fast-paced, with great character development and you got to know all the characters really well. I think I liked the first book a bit more, even though Scarlet is my new favorite character!

If you haven't read Cinder yet - WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Go pick it up right now!

The Enemy // Charlie Higson

Posted on Wednesday, June 26, 2013

London is in chaos. Everyone over the age of 14 is either dead or has turned into zombie-like, hungry creatures and they only want to eat one thing: children. The Enemy follows a group of kids living at Waitrose supermarket in Holloway, they are running out of food, and when a boy appears and tells them that the Buckingham Palace is safe, they go with him on a dangerous journey across London.
Meanwhile, Little Sam is separated from the group and has to fight the grown ups on his own while searching for his sister. Along the way, he gets captured by several groups of grown ups and his storyline was definitely the most interesting one.
We also get a few chapters about Callum, the only kid who chose to stay at the supermarket while the others left for Buckingham Palace. As many of the other characters, Callum really grew on me. I didn't like him a lot at the beginning of the book, but towards the end I felt really bad for him and wanted to give him a hug.

You get introduced to a lot of characters, which was a bit confusing in the beginning. It wasn't until I got about 100 pages into the book that I really started to care about the characters. You meet Arran, Maxie, Freak & Deak, Blue, Ollie and a lot more characters. I mixed some of them up in the beginning, but everyone has their own unique personality that made them easy to separate once you learned the names. Little Sam teams up with a girl named Rhiannon and a mysterious boy called "The Kid". The three of them ended up being my favorite characters and I can't wait to read more about Little Sam in the rest of the books.

You realize pretty quickly that no one is safe in this book. After 150 pages, Higson has already killed off two main characters, and by the end of the book, there are a lot more dead kids. The book was very unpredictable. You never knew if the kids were going to get to Buckingham Palace, if Little Sam was going to reunite with the group or if Callum would go after the others. You never knew who would die next. The book was a bit "choppy" at some points. It didn't always pick up where the last chapter ended, and that was a bit irritating. The writing style was great and pulled me in very quickly.

The book is filled with blood and gore, and it's really really action-packed and fast-paced. I recommend it for anyone who want's a good zombie-book!
I ended up giving this book 4.5/5 stars, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

#FridayReads 21.6.2013

Posted on Friday, June 21, 2013

This weekend I'm going to be starting The Enemy by Charlie Higson, which sounds really awesome and action-packed! The book is set in London after all the grown ups have been turned into zombies(?) and the remaining kids try to survive. It's been on my shelf for a while, and I'm in the mood for something fast paced, so I'm hoping to fall in love with it!

I'm not sure if I'm going to finish it this weekend, though. The day is almost over, and tomorrow is my birthday, so I'll be busy almost the entire day! On sunday I'm celebrating with my friends, so I probably won't have the time to read until I go to bed, and whenever I try to read in bed, I just end up falling asleep. Oh well, I'm hoping to read at least 100 pages today and finish the book next week!

As always, tell me what you're reading down below!

#FridayReads 14.6.2013

Posted on Friday, June 14, 2013

This has been a pretty bad reading week for me, but I'm hoping to fix that this weekend. I started Scarlet by Marissa Meyer, and I'm more than halfway through it, so I think I'll finish it today.
Scarlet is the second book in the Lunar Chronicles, and I don't really like doing reviews of sequels if I don't have a review of the first book, but I think I might review this anyway!

When I finish Scarlet I think I'm going to pick up An Abundance of Katherines. I didn't finish A Clash of Kings last weekend like I was hoping, but I might pick it up this weekend as well! I'm hoping to finish as many books as possible in the near future, because I'm a little behind on my reading challenge.

Top 10 Summer Songs of 2013

Posted on Thursday, June 13, 2013

Another non-book related blog post. I actually haven't finished any books since my last post, but it's very close to summer break and school has been crazy lately.
Here are my top 10 summer songs of 2013. I chose mostly light, fun, feel-good songs, because that's what I like to listen to in the summertime. Let me know down below what your favorite summer songs are!

Daughter - Landfill
This song is really beautiful, and probably my favorite song by Daughter. It's really great for those calm days with lots of sun. I'm going to see Daughter this summer as well! Ah, I can't wait.

Jonas Alaska - I Saw You Kid
I've added some Norwegian artists in here, and Jonas Alaska is one of them. His new album is pretty good, but I Saw You Kid is definitely my favorite song out of the bunch.

Bastille - The Weight of Living part 1 & 2
Bastille has become one of my favorite bands, and my favourite summer songs on their new album is Weight of Living part 1 and 2. If I had to pick a favorite out of the two, I would probably choose part two though, because of the electronic beat, and I overall think it's more catchy.

Mikhael Paskalev - I Spy
Another Norwegian artist. His voice is pretty similar to Jonas Alaska's, and some of the songs on both of their albums are pretty similar, but I like I Spy better than most of Alaska's songs. I think I like Jonas Alaska better overall though. This song is definitely worth checking out!

Daft Punk - Get Lucky
I had to include this song, didn't I? It's the summer song of the year, and oh god, it's catchy. I'm just praying that there won't be another hit like Call Me Maybe that pushes it off the top of the charts. I don't like a lot of other songs by Daft Punk, so this is definitely my favorite.

Walk The Moon - Anna Sun
This was released in January 2012 but I'm still not tired off it.  It's not my favorite song on this list, but I still recommend it.

Jonas Alaska - In The Backseat
Another song by Jonas Alaska. This was his first single and it was released in 2011. It was played a lot on the radio here in Norway, so most Norwegians know the song, but not a lot of people know the artist. I really recommend Jonas Alaska, and I love this song.

Tegan and Sara - Closer
This was released in November, but I think it works all year round. Tegan and Sara are both really talented, and this song is super catchy!

CHVRCHES - Recover
I just discovered CHVRCHES and I'll definitely listen to them a lot this summer. I love Lauren Mayberrys voice as well!

I hope you discovered some new songs! What are some of your favorite summer songs?

#Friday Reads 7.6.2013

Posted on Friday, June 7, 2013

This weekend I'm going to continue with, and hopefully finish A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin. It's the second book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series and I'm currently at page 673 of 913 (including the information about the houses in the last pages) I don't think it's impossible to finish it in two or three days, and I'm really looking forwards to finishing it!

If I finish A Clash of Kings this weekend, I'm either going to pick up the next book right away, which is A Storm of Swords, or pick up something lighter, like An Abundance of Katherines by John Green.

What are you reading this weekend?

Cats

My cat must be so tired of me taking pictures of him by now. Oh well, at least they turned out pretty good. The middle one is a cat from my neighborhood, she's really cute but we're not friends because she likes to get into cat fights(literally) with my cat.
I'll probably post things that aren't book related on here sometimes, too. Hope you don't mind!

Do you own any cats?

Currently Reading: Clash of Kings

Posted on Thursday, June 6, 2013

Sorry for the lack of posts the last few days, but I haven't finished any new books, so I didn't have any books to review. I'm currently reading A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin, the second book in A Song of Ice and Fire. I have about 300 pages left and my goal is to finish it this week!

Pandemonium // Lauren Oliver

Posted on Saturday, June 1, 2013

Pandemonium is the sequel to Delirium, a book I loved. Delirium ended with Lena escaping into the wilds, leaving Alex behing, presumably dead.  Pandemonium alternates between "then" and "now", the "then" part picks up right where Delirium ended, with Lena getting saved by a group of Invalids, and the "now" part follows Lena in New York City as a part of the resistance. While she is in NYC, she gets kidnapped by a group of Invalids called the Scavengers and she meets a boy named Julian. The book is about them falling in love while Lena is still coping with losing Alex, and about them escaping from the Scavengers.

I really did not like the alternating chapters. They were confusing, and the "then" chapters became less important deeper into the book. Lauren Oliver's writing style is so beautiful, but I was not interested in this book at all during the first 250 pages, I actually put it down for about two weeks because it didn't pull me in at all. I didn't feel an attachment to any of the new characters, especially Raven, whom I did not like very much and while I liked Julian, I didn't care a lot about him until the last 50 pages.

The last chapter was pretty long and really action packed. I was on the edge of my chair the entire time, cursing and probably making some really weird facial expressions. Those last pages was what pulled up my rating off the book. And the last page - OH MY GOD. Someone had already spoiled the ending for me, but I was still in shock for an hour after finishing the book, and now I'm really mad at myself for not buying Requiem before I finished Pandemonium.

If you have yet to pick up Delirium, definitely do it!

What did you think of Pandemonium?

#Friday Reads 31.06.2013

Posted on Friday, May 31, 2013

This weekend I will be continuing with Light by Michael Grant, and probably finish it. I was really happy when I received it in the mail but my motivation for reading has been non existant since getting sick. I'm well now though, and I'll definitely sit down and read some more before I go to bed tonight!
My goal is to finish Light tonight so I can feel a bit better about finishing three boks in May instead of two.

After reading Light I'm either going to continue reading Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver(I only have about 100 pages left, but I'm not loving it) or A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin which is really good but a bit difficult to read.

What are you reading this weekend?

Reading Wrap Up // May 2013

Posted on Wednesday, May 29, 2013

The last few months have been horrible reading months for me. Although May started out pretty good, and I felt optimistic after buying some new books that I really want to read soon, I got sick and lost all interest in doing anything but sleeping and watching Arrested Development. I ended up reading three books, and starting two more.

The first book I finished was Wonder by RJ Palacio. I did a full review of it for my English final that you can check out here and a video review that you can check out here, but if you want something a little more general I'll sum it up for you. The book is about August Pullman, a ten year old boy with an abnormal looking face. His eyes are placed halfway down his cheeks, his lower eyelids are pulled down, he has a big gap in his upper lip and so on. The book is about him starting public school for the first time, and it was really heartbreaking. I gave the book 4/5 stars on GoodReads because I felt like some parts were a bit unnecessary, but I definitely recommend it!

The second book I read was Wither by Lauren DeStefano, the first book in the Chemical Garden trilogy . Wither is a dystopian book about a world were all women die when they turn 20 and all men when they turn 25. It follows 16-year old Rhine who is kidnapped and together with two other girls she is forced to marry House Governor Linden, the son of a rich geneticist. I really liked this book although the world building was horrible and the characters were also pretty bad. Rhine came across as a strong character, willing to fight her way out to be reunited with her twin brother and I liked her for that, but I still didn't connect with her, and I didn't care what happened to her. Linden came across as very naïve wich annoyed me, but I was still charmed by him.
The people in this book were very thoroughly described, but the world was not. We got to know that South America was the only remaining continent in the world, wich i didn't really understand, and it seemed way too unlikely, but I hope that Rhine turns out to be wrong about that later in the trilogy. Overall though, I really enjoyed this book. I definitely had some issues with it, but it kept me up all night and I'm probably going to pick up the next book in this trilogy very soon. I also found the book very similar to The Selection by Kiera Cass, although Linden cannot compare to prince Maxon and The Selection was overall a better book.

And then, last minute, I finished Light by Michael Grant, the last book in the Gone-series. It's been a year since everyone over the age of fourteen disappeared and now the kids have to fight one last challenge, the gaiaphage, before the end. I am not going to spoil the book for those of you who have yet to read it, but I think it was a great ending to the series. I gave it 4/5 stars on GoodReads, mainly because I wasn't a huge fan of the plot and I had some problems with the timing. In the previous books we get the impression that it takes a while to walk from Perdido Beach to the lake to Clifftop, but in this book it seemed like it took people five minutes to walk that distance. I may have misunderstood something, but that annoyed me a bit. I had a similar problem with the last chapter before the aftermath, the one where the countdown is at eleven minutes. To me, that chapter felt like three minute at most. Those were just some small things that annoyed me, and they pulled down my rating a bit, but I still really enjoyed the book and I thing everyone should read the Gone-series.

Wonder // RJ Palacio

This book review was written for my English final, but I decided to post it here because it's a really heartbreaking book that everyone should read.

Wonder by RJ Palacio

When August Pullman was born, his nurse fainted. People looked away in disgust and children ran away from him, screaming. August was never like the other kids. He was born with a series of facial anomalies that necessitated in a lot of surgeries. Most people would probably guess that he looked somewhat normal after 20 surgeries, but although we don’t get an accurate description of his face, he looks anything but normal.  His eyes are placed almost halfway down his cheeks, his lower eyelids are pulled down and his his upper lip has a big gap.

I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.

When he turns ten, his parents decide that it’s a good idea for August to start public school for the first time, and this book follows August through fifth grade. It is told from multiple first-person points of view, including August’s himself, his sister Via’s and some of his friends. It is definitely a character-driven book and even though you don’t necessarily agree with the characters, you always get where they’re coming from. This made most of the characters in the book phenomenal. They were realistic and flawed, but easy to understand, and I was rooting for them throughout the entire book. However I felt like some of the characters, including August’s parents were a bit too perfect which pulled down my rating of the book a bit.

Kinder than is necessary. Because it’s not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed.

Even though I liked most of the characters, I felt like some of them were a bit unnecessary and made the story more difficult to follow, like Via’s boyfriend Justin. There were a couple of chapters from his point of view in this book, but they didn’t add anything to the story. Even though I enjoyed the length of the book, some of those parts could have been cut out off the book.
My favorite character in this book, however, was Via. Although she never got any attention from her parents, she never once complained and she was always supporting of her brother. To me, she was the most relatable character.

Your deeds are like your monuments. Built with memories instead of stone.

The book falls under several genres; Middle Grade, Young Adult, Realistic and Contemporary fiction. I think it fits for children and teenagers over the age of 10 as well as parents and teachers. The style of the book is simple, although the plot can get complicated.

Somethings you just can’t explain. You don’t even try. All your sentences would jumble up like a giant knot if you opened your mouth.

The book touches on a lot of difficult topics, like having a disability, bullying and death. I feel like the book created a really strong role model for children with facial anomalies as well as giving people a hint to what it’s like being August.

Here’s what i think: The only reason I’m not ordinary is that no one else sees me that way.”

All in all I give the book 4/5 stars. It was really amazing and heartbreaking, with great character development throughout the book, but some of the parts were unnecessary.

“Everybody deserves a standing ovation because we all overcometh the world.
